Mushroom Hunters in New York City

Alice finds a mushroom in Central Park...
This is Alice, a member of the New York Mycological Society, a group of amateur mushroom sleuths in New York City. They meet on weekends from April through October in parks and cemeteries around New York to search out wild mushrooms. When I was up in Central Park interviewing Alice, she came upon this mushroom growing way up on the trunk of an oak tree. Who would have ever thought to look up for mushrooms?

Alice says, "My assistant calls us, 'The Mushroom People'.  We have about 160 members and go on field trips to pick mushrooms, have identification sessions, winter lectures, and just generally have a good time. And no small part of it is that we have lots of eating get-togethers, too!"
